The Truth About Your First Season
Here's what most beginner guides won't tell you directly: your first year is a learning year, not a production year. The goal is not honey. The goal is a living, healthy colony that makes it to spring. If you end your first season with bees still in the hive, you succeeded — regardless of whether you harvested a single jar.
This framing matters because it changes what you measure. A first-year beekeeper who harvests no honey but overwinters a strong colony is ahead of one who pulled honey in August and lost the colony in January. Honey comes in year two. Survival skills come in year one.
A beekeeping journal or logbook is one of the most valuable tools you can have this first year (check current price on Amazon). Writing down what you see at every inspection — queen status, brood pattern, food stores, temperament — gives you a record to look back on, patterns to recognize, and something concrete to share with a mentor when you have questions.
Spring: Getting Started (March–May in Colorado)
For most of Colorado, bee season starts in earnest in April. Before that, you're in preparation mode.
January–February: The Pre-Season Window
This is when serious first-year beekeepers get ahead. Register with the Colorado Department of Agriculture, order your bees (packages and nucs sell out fast — don't wait), assemble and paint your hive equipment, and read as much as you can. Find your local beekeeping club and attend a meeting or beginner workshop. Line up a mentor if possible.
By the end of February your hive should be assembled, your bees should be on order, and you should have at least one good beginner book read cover to cover.
March: Almost Ready
In most Colorado locations, March is still too cold to install bees, but it's the right time to finalize your setup. Place your hive stand, orient the entrance, confirm your water source is in place, and double-check your gear. If you haven't registered with the CDA yet, do it now.
Flowers start appearing on the Front Range in March — early willows, maples, and dandelions. If you have an established colony coming out of winter, this is when they start building up. For a new beekeeper, it's a preview of what's coming.
April–May: Installation and Early Growth
Most Colorado packages arrive in April. Installation day is exciting and, for most beginners, less terrifying than expected. You'll shake bees into the hive, place the queen cage, close it up, and leave them alone for a few days. Your first inspection, typically 5–7 days after installation, is when you confirm the queen has been released and the colony is beginning to build.
Spring in Colorado is volatile. A warm week can be followed by a hard freeze. New colonies are fragile — they're building comb, raising their first brood, and establishing the colony from scratch. Feed sugar syrup (1:1 ratio, water to sugar) until they have drawn comb and consistent foraging. Resist the urge to open the hive every other day; every inspection is a disruption.
Summer: Managing Growth and Heat (June–August)
A colony installed in April can grow dramatically by July. What was a small cluster of bees filling half a box becomes a booming colony packing out two deeps and potentially ready to swarm. Summer is the most active management period of the year.
June: The Peak Nectar Flow
Colorado's Front Range and mountain foothills typically peak in late May through June. Clover, wildflowers, and late fruit tree blossoms give foragers plenty to work with. A healthy colony will be building rapidly, filling frames with nectar and pollen, and raising lots of brood. This is the most rewarding time to do inspections — activity is high, temperament is usually good (full bees are calm bees), and the hive is visibly thriving.
Watch for swarm preparations. A colony that feels crowded will start raising new queens and prepare to split itself in half, with the old queen leaving with roughly half the worker population. Regular inspections every 7–10 days let you spot queen cells early and manage the hive space to reduce swarming pressure.
July–August: The Dearth
Colorado summers often bring a "summer dearth" — a stretch of hot, dry weeks when most flowers stop producing nectar. Foraging slows, colony populations peak and begin to decline naturally, and bees can become more defensive as they guard limited stores against robbers.
This is the time to assess your colony's honey stores and make a hard call: do you have enough surplus to harvest, or does the colony need everything it's storing for winter? Most first-year colonies in Colorado don't have harvestable surplus by August. That's normal. Don't pull honey the colony needs to survive.
Late summer is also when you should conduct your first varroa mite count. A sticky board or alcohol wash will tell you whether mite levels are manageable or require treatment. Don't skip this step — varroa is the number one cause of colony loss in North America.
Fall: Preparing for Winter (September–October)
Fall is short in Colorado. The window between summer heat and hard frost is measured in weeks, not months. What you do in September and October determines whether your colony survives until spring.
Food Stores
A colony entering a Colorado winter needs 60–80 pounds of honey in the hive — that's roughly two full deep boxes of capped honey. Lift the back of your hive; it should feel heavy. Light hives need to be fed now, before it gets too cold for bees to take syrup. A hive top feeder is the most efficient way to deliver large volumes of syrup quickly (check current price on Amazon). Switch to 2:1 syrup (two parts sugar, one part water) in fall — the thicker ratio is closer to honey and easier for bees to process before cold sets in.
Varroa Treatment
If your mite count was high in August, treat now. The winter cluster is raised from bees born in September and October — these are the bees that must survive five or six months until spring. High varroa loads shorten their lifespan and weaken the winter cluster. Oxalic acid treatments are highly effective and safe when applied correctly.
Winterizing the Hive
Colorado winters require real preparation. Consolidate your hive to two boxes if the colony is smaller; a small colony can't heat a large space. Add an upper entrance or drill a small hole in the top box so condensation has somewhere to escape — moisture kills more Colorado colonies than cold does. Some beekeepers wrap hives in tar paper or roofing felt to absorb solar heat; others add a windbreak. At minimum, ensure the hive entrance won't be completely blocked by snow.
Winter: Monitoring Without Disturbing (November–February)
Once temperatures drop consistently below 50°F, your bees form a winter cluster — a tight ball of bees that generates heat by vibrating their flight muscles. They won't break cluster to eat; they move slowly through their honey stores as a group. Opening the hive in winter chills the cluster and can be fatal. Don't do it.
What you can do: heft the hive every few weeks to feel for weight loss. A dramatically lighter hive in January may indicate starvation — if so, emergency fondant or candy boards placed directly on top of the cluster can save a colony without fully opening the hive. Listen at the entrance on a warm day; a healthy cluster produces a low hum. Silence from a cluster-sized colony in February is a bad sign.
Winter is also your study season. Read, join your local club's winter meetings, and reflect on what you observed during the season. Your notes will be invaluable now.
Will I Get Honey in Year One? (Honest Answer)
Maybe — but don't plan on it, and don't prioritize it.
A package installed in April in Colorado needs to build all its comb from scratch, establish a laying queen, raise its first brood, and build up a forager population before it can store any surplus. In a good year with a strong nectar flow and a healthy queen, a well-managed colony might have harvestable surplus by late July. In a difficult year, it won't, and pulling what little surplus exists could starve the colony over winter.
A nuc installed in April has a head start — it arrives on drawn comb with an established queen — and is more likely to produce a small first-year harvest. But even then, leaving all the honey for the colony is often the wiser call in year one.
The honest advice: if you can clearly see that your colony has substantial capped honey surplus beyond what they need for winter, a shallow super's worth of harvest is reasonable. If you're uncertain, leave it. Honey in year two from a colony you successfully overwintered is worth more than a few jars extracted from a colony that starves in January.
Common First-Year Losses and How to Handle Them
Colony loss in the first year is common and not a reason to quit. Understanding what happened matters more than the loss itself.
- Queen failure — a new colony's queen fails to lay or is lost. Signs: no eggs or young brood after 2–3 weeks, declining population. Solution: order a new mated queen promptly; most suppliers ship them.
- Starvation — the colony runs out of food, most often in late winter or early spring before the first flowers. Prevention: adequate fall feeding and winter food stores; monitoring hive weight through winter.
- Varroa collapse — untreated varroa mites overwhelm the colony, typically becoming obvious in late fall as population crashes and deformed bees appear. Prevention: test and treat on schedule.
- Winter moisture — condensation inside the hive kills the cluster. Prevention: upper ventilation, moisture quilts, or insulated top boards.
If you lose a colony, conduct a postmortem before cleaning out the equipment. Look at the pattern of the loss — where the cluster died, how much food remains, what the brood pattern looked like. The evidence tells the story, and understanding it makes you a better beekeeper for year two.
FAQ: First Year Beekeeping in Colorado
When should I do my first hive inspection?
Five to seven days after installation. This gives the queen time to be released from her cage and begin laying without your interrupting the process. At this first inspection, you're confirming queen release, checking for eggs (tiny white grains standing upright in cells), and assessing whether the colony is drawing comb and taking syrup.
How often should I inspect my hive?
Every 7–10 days during the active season (April through August). More frequent than that and you're disrupting more than you're learning. Less frequent and you can miss developing problems — a swarming colony, a failing queen, or a rapidly growing varroa population — that are much easier to address early.
What if I can't find the queen?
Look for eggs instead. If you can see eggs — tiny, upright, single white grains in the center of cells — a queen was present and laying within the last three days. You don't need to see the queen herself to confirm she's there. Looking for eggs is a more reliable indicator than hunting for the queen on every frame.
My bees seem aggressive. Is something wrong?
Bees are more defensive in certain conditions: hot weather, before a storm, during a dearth, when the hive is diseased or queenless. If your normally calm colony is suddenly highly defensive, investigate. A queen problem is often the cause. If defensiveness is persistent and unrelated to conditions, requeening with a gentler queen is a legitimate option.
Should I treat for varroa in year one?
Yes, absolutely. There is no "wait and see" approach to varroa that ends well. Test mite levels in late July or August using an alcohol wash or sugar roll. If counts exceed the action threshold (typically 3 mites per 100 bees), treat before the winter bees are raised in August and September. Oxalic acid treatments are effective, affordable, and widely available.
What if my colony swarms?
A swarm means half your bees — and the old queen — have left to find a new home. The colony left behind will raise a new queen from existing eggs. Your job is to not panic, let the process complete, and verify after 3–4 weeks that a new queen is laying. Contact your local beekeeping association's swarm line to recover the swarm cluster if it's accessible; they'll often come collect it for free.
Year One Sets Up Year Two
Every inspection, every mistake, every unexpected development in your first season is building something that can't be bought: pattern recognition. The beekeeper who works a hive 20 times in year one and pays close attention arrives at year two with an eye trained to see what's normal, what's off, and what needs action. That's the foundation everything else is built on.
